The day after his marriage to his childhood love, Khanak, Suraj goes to the factory to fix up a machine for the inauguration. Shantanu’s recklessness causes Suraj to get electrocuted and seriously injured. Suraj dies in pain, leaving behind a shocked Shantanu and a grieving Khanak.
Shantanu’s father offers a huge compensation to the bereaved family, and Suraj’s brother Mangal, blinded by greed, accepts this offer. Khanak, however, refuses the compensation and demands justice instead. At the Panchayat meeting, Shantanu shocks everyone by saying that Khanak should take the compensation offered and move on with her life. The appalled sarpanch announces the judgment – since Shantanu has destroyed Khanak’s life, he would find a groom for her.
As a solution and atonement – Shantanu get on to search for the perfect groom and meets with a number of hurdles. He comes to face with the stigma attached to being a widow. Finally, he succeeds in luring a man working in a grocery store called Mulji with a fat sum of Rs. 20 lakhs. Khanak voices her resentment and refuses to re-marry. She says that she doesn’t want anything but justice. However, Suraj’s family and the Panchayat approve of the groom that Shantanu has found for Khanak and marriage preparations begin.
